Chocolate Chess Pie

Today, I made one of the best desserts ever...Chocolate Chess Pie!

This recipe is courtesy of Angus Barn in Raleigh, NC. Thad Eure Jr. and Charles M. Winston opened the Angus Barn in 1960 when this part of Raleigh was a pastoral, country setting. Today, the Angus Barn is in the midst of the action between the RDU Airport, Raleigh and Durham. It is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. When you pay your bill, this recipe is given to you on a beautifully decorated card. It is a most requested recipe from their restaurant. It is incredibly delicious with the richness only chocolate can bring and let me tell you, your chocolate craving will be gone with the indulgence of this pie! The time is not including making your own pie crust, if that is what you use.

SERVES 8

Ingredients

Super Easy Directions

  1. Melt butter and chocolate.
  2. Mix with other ingredients which have been blended together.
  3. Pour into pie crust.
  4. Bake 35 minutes, at 350 degrees.
  5. Top with whipped cream or ice cream.

Chess pies are a Southern specialty that has a simple filling of eggs, sugar, butter, and a small amount of flour. Some recipes include cornmeal and others are made with vinegar. Flavorings, such as vanilla, lemon juice, or chocolate are also added to vary the basic recipe.

The origin of the name, Chess Pie, is uncertain, but there are plenty of guesses

and a bit of folklore surrounding the name. The most probable explanation is

that since the English lemon curd pie filling is very close to lemon chess pie, and they believe the word
“chess”
is an Americanization of the
English word “cheese,” referring to curd pie. Basically the Chess Pie is a cheese-less cheesecake.

Some folklore:

  • One explanation suggests that the word is “chest,” pronounced with a drawl and used to describe these pies baked with so much sugar they could be stored in a pie chest rather than refrigerated.
  • Another story is about the plantation cook who was asked what she was baking that smelled so great - “Jes’ pie” was her answer.

Thank you SO much for the chocolate chess pie recipe. I have not had this for 20 years. My mom would buy this from Rich's department store. Rich's is now gone and I wondered if I would ever taste it again.

As I write my third pie is in the oven. I added macadamia nuts on one half and walnuts on the other. I also chopped up a spare fortune cookie and added that to both sides.

I am in Hawaii these days and am so happy to have this downhome delicacy back in my life.

It's interesting to see just how permeant virtual memory has become in our every day lives. It seems like everytime I turn my head, I see something with a card slot or USB jack, lol. I guess it makes sense though, considering how much more afforable memory has become lately...

Gahhhh, I shouldn't be complaining. I can't get by a single day without my R4 / R4i!

I've made this recipe many times but never seem to do the things in the right order...which matters if it's going to set or not! :-) The pictures helped tremendously. Thank you!

Some friends of mine tried chess pie in Nashville last year and raved about it. I tried some other recipes on the internet, but they didn't turn out like the pie my friends remembered. This one did, and it's delicious. Thank you!

Iceland's Supreme Court issued a ruling that Fischer's alleged daughter, Jinky Young, has authority to exhume his remains. Although Ms. Young is being tight-lipped regarding her reason for this drastic move, we are speculating that she will assert that Fischer's hand was "not off the piece" when he died, and as such, she would like to make a more defensive play on his behalf by castling, which would leave at least a knight and several pawns as a defensive perimeter.

I hardly leave responses, however after browsing a few of the remarks here "Chocolate Chess Pie".
I actually do have a few questions for you if it's allright. Is it only me or do a few of the comments appear like they are coming from brain dead visitors? :-P And, if you are writing at additional sites, I'd like to follow you.
